Data transport application

The Transport Application enables centres to exchange entries and results data directly with JCQ awarding organisations, supporting the JCQ Formats for exchange of assessment related data, commonly referred to as Electronic Data Interchange (EDI).

Key features

  • Free to Use: The application is provided at no cost to centres.
  • Direct Data Exchange: Enables secure and direct transfer of EDI files between centres and JCQ awarding organisations.
  • Supplier: Avco Systems supplies and maintains the application on behalf of JCQ.
  • Download and Installation: The latest version of the application, along with installation instructions, is available from the Downloads section of the AVCO Systems website.

Who needs the transport application?

  • Centres using the JCQ EDI formats for assessment-related data exchange require the Data Transport Application to send and receive EDI files.
  • If your centre’s MIS is not compliant or does not have integrated data transfer functionality, you will need to use the standalone A2C Transport Application.

Integrated solutions

Some MIS suppliers are now integrating data transport functionality directly into their systems. If your MIS includes an in-built Data Transfer application, you will not need a separate Data Transfer Application. For details on whether your MIS has this capability, please consult your MIS supplier.

AVCO systems and the data transport application

AVCO Systems manages and maintains the Data Transport Application on behalf of JCQ members. This application helps centres securely exchange examination-related data with awarding organisations. AVCO’s role ensures the application is up to date, secure, and responsive to the needs of centres.

You can find further information and download the latest version of the application from the official A2C Transport Application website.

Data standardisation project specification

The ZIP file below contains the latest A2C Data Specification (version 2022). This forms part of the A2C Data Standardisation project, which was paused in June 2025. As a result, the 2022 specification remains the current version in use.

Please note, this specification is separate from the A2C Data Transport Application. The Data Transport Application, which supports the exchange of data between awarding organisations and centres, remains unchanged and continues to operate as normal. Further information on the A2C Data Transport Application please see – Welcome to the A2C Transport application download site

If you are a MIS provider developing A2C software, you should request access to the A2C SharePoint site. It includes useful resources such as best practice guidance, XML examples, awarding organisation-specific details, and Word versions of the specification showing tracked changes. To request access, please email a2c@jcq.org.uk

The A2C Entity Blocks Schema (XSD) is published separately and is also available via the JCQ SharePoint site.
