Appeals:
JCQ and the exam boards would like to thank all exam centre staff for your continued support and hard work to help ensure students can progress this year.
To make the appeals process as smooth as possible for you and your students here are some top tips:
- You must carry out a centre review (stage 1) before you submit an appeal to the exam board (stage 2). You must provide the outcome of the centre review to the exam board when you submit the stage 2 appeal to the exam board along with the student’s application form for the centre review and the cohort assessment record or equivalent.
- Check what documentation is required for the appeal you are submitting to the exam board (stage 2). For example, for an academic judgement appeal you need to send a copy of the student’s work and the questions/tasks the student responded to so the exam board has the documents used by the centre in deciding the provisional grade. The JCQ evidence checklist (Appendix C) sets out the information the exam boards need. Exam board websites have more details too. Providing this information will mean you don’t get requests for more information and the appeal won’t be delayed.
- Remind students that if they appeal on multiple grounds, their appeal will take longer to complete. They should only select the ground they believe are relevant to their case.
- When you want to correct a student’s grade as a result of a centre error, review the JCQ guidance for centres on correcting grades (Appendix D) before you submit your request. If you are asking to lower a student’s grade, you should consider any adverse effect this might have on the student, including on their progression to higher education and confirm that you have considered this.
Post 16 Level 3 Consultation Outcomes Statement JCQ has produced a joint statement making clear the boards' collective position following the Post 16 Level 3 Consultation, which was published by the DfE this summer.
