DfE/Ofqual announcement on 2023 arrangements

The Department for Education (DfE) and Ofqual have announced the examination arrangements for 2023 in England.

More details of the announcement can be found here.

Provisional June 2023 GCSE, GCE AS and A-level exam timetables

Following the DfE/Ofqual announcement about the arrangements for summer 2023, the awarding bodies have now published their provisional GCSE, GCE AS and A-level exam timetables for next summer.

The awarding bodies’ provisional exam timetables can be found at:

  • AQA

  • OCR

  • Pearson

  • Eduqas / WJEC

Feedback about the spacing between exams in the same subject in summer 2022 has been taken on board and this will largely be preserved in future, although the spacing between the papers will be slightly reduced next summer. This should still help to avoid the situation of a candidate missing all exams within a subject.

You can send comments on the provisional exam timetables from Thursday 29 September until Thursday 13 October 2022. Please visit your awarding body’s website for more information. Please forward this email to relevant staff in your centre to give them an opportunity to provide feedback on the timetables.

For CCEA’s timetable consultation and Special Consideration arrangements, please refer to the CCEA website.

Results days will be on 17 August 2023 for AS/A-levels and 24 August 2023 for GCSEs.

Special consideration

The awarding bodies have reviewed the summer 2022 arrangements for special consideration. Where a candidate was absent from an exam or assessment for an acceptable reason, they could receive a grade as long as they had completed at least one entire component of a qualification.

This will now be adopted for all future exam series and will make it easier for both centres and awarding bodies to identify eligible candidates. JCQ will update its Guide to the Special Consideration Process with further details by October 7, 2022.
