JCQ’s Associate Membership explained
Your route into the community keeping UK qualification administration fair and consistent.
If your organisation is UK-regulated, delivering qualifications, and ready to access the guidance, shared services and credibility that JCQ provides, this page tells you exactly what you get, what it costs and why it matters.
Is Associate Membership right for you?
Associate Membership is for awarding organisations accredited by one of the UK’s regulators to offer qualifications at Levels 1, 2 and 3. These must be reported in the appropriate government performance tables, DfE performance tables in England, and the equivalent tables maintained by the devolved administrations in Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland.
If your organisation is delivering qualifications, this is the right route for you. You’ll get official access to the guidance that schools and colleges across the UK rely on, shared services, and an experienced community, all without the commitment of a Full Membership.
Ask yourself three simple questions:
Is my organisation UK-regulated and delivering qualifications?
Do I want official access to the guidance that schools and colleges across the UK rely on?Am I ready to be recognised alongside the UK’s leading awarding organisations?
If you answered yes to all three, Associate Membership is for you.
Not sure yet or want something more transactional? Licensing gives you access to JCQ’s guidance without joining as a member. Read about JCQ’s Licensing scheme.
What Associate Membership gives you
Full Members work together to build and maintain the shared services the sector relies on. Associate Membership means you benefit from that investment without the cost or effort of running it yourself.
Access to Centre Admin Portal (CAP) and Access Arrangements Online (AAO)
The CAP lets your centres manage access arrangements applications, request modified papers and handle consortium and transferred candidate arrangements, all in one place. AAO sits within it, meaning your centres can submit a single application per student rather than applying separately to each member awarding organisation.
Access to the Centre Inspection Service (CIS), where relevant
JCQ runs year-round inspections across England, Wales and Northern Ireland, checking secure storage, exam conduct and access arrangements. As an Associate Member, your centres are covered by the same inspection standard as every other member’s, where relevant.
Registration on the National Centre Number Register
A single, verified record of every approved centre and its key contacts, kept current so results, question papers and inspection visits all run against the same accurate data, rather than each organisation maintaining its own version.
Observer status on JCQ committees
Associate Members can join a select number of JCQ committees as observers, with the flexibility to change which ones they attend each year. These are the groups where guidance is developed, challenges are discussed, and common approaches are agreed across the sector.
It’s a window into how JCQ works and how the sector thinks. For a newer or growing awarding organisation, that kind of access and insight is difficult to replicate elsewhere.
Through JCQ membership, awarding organisations have a valued platform to engage, exchange ideas, and develop common approaches to key challenges.

Regular updates, newsletters and guidance bulletins
Our monthly newsletter reaches schools, colleges and other educational establishments across the UK with guidance updates, key deadlines and sector developments, alongside targeted bulletins written specifically for senior leaders. Our “New to Role” webinars for newly appointed exams officers are rated professional and valuable by 97% of attendees.
Official use of JCQ guidance and regulations
JCQ’s guidance is the framework that keeps qualification administration consistent and fair across every school, college and centre in the UK. Experienced representatives from JCQ’s founding members developed it, and Ofqual, CCEA Regulation, Qualifications Wales, the Department for Education, and devolved administrations legally reviewed and consulted on it.
As an Associate Member, you have the official right to use that guidance and direct your centres to follow it. This benefits both your operations and your reputation.
Having such clear and thorough JCQ guidance across all areas means we can be sure our processes are fair and that every student is treated equally during assessments.

Brand recognition
Your organisation’s name and logo appear on the JCQ website and, where appropriate in relevant documentation, association with the JCQ brand signals to centres, regulators and government departments exactly where you stand.
So, Associate Membership gives you shared services you don’t have to build, established guidance you don’t have to develop, sector insight and a place in the community shaping qualification administration across the UK.
Join the growing JCQ community: your organisation belongs here
There are more than 200 UK-regulated awarding organisations. Most of them are not yet part of JCQ. If your organisation is one of them, now is the time to join.
Associate Membership is £30,000 to £50,000 per year, depending on your organisation’s size and turnover, plus a one-off £10,000 onboarding fee.
Associate Membership gives your organisation the guidance, shared services and credibility of JCQ, with a clear path to greater involvement as you grow. With JCQ’s profile growing across the sector, joining the community sooner rather than later puts your organisation in the right place at the right time.
Get in touch and a member of our team will contact you to walk you through everything, confirm which fee band applies to your organisation and answer any questions you have. We’ll keep you informed at every stage of the process.

Once your membership is confirmed, a dedicated membership manager will welcome you to JCQ, ensure you have access to everything you need and introduce you to the relevant committees. They will provide ongoing support, including a formal review after six months to ensure your membership is meeting your organisation’s needs.
